Check Out This Plug-In for C4D & Blender That Created Realistic Damage

Edgy has six ready setups, and you can create more.

Cornelius Dämmrich's plug-in for Blender and Cinema 4D called Edgy helps artists create lifelike environments and props by adding realistic damage to objects in the scene. The tool cuts damage into the edges and surfaces of a closed mesh.

The plug-in ensures a true-to-life look as it modifies the mesh itself, and the damage is visible in the silhouette at any camera distance and in any render engine.

The original mesh remains unchanged. In Cinema 4D, it becomes a child object under the Edgy generator, while in Blender, the result gets saved to a new object placed next to it.

The tool features 6 damage modules:

  • Chips along the exposed edges.

  • Corners: larger damage at the points where several exposed edges meet.

  • Craters: shallow dents on the flat surfaces, distributed by area.

  • Fracture, which is crack networks in up to three levels.

  • Buildup: material added instead of removed, along the inner corners and in the nooks.

  • Breaker, which removes whole pieces.

Artists can create their own presets and reuse them. The result is cached; each damage type is written to its own selection in Cinema 4D and to its own face attribute and material slot in Blender, so it can carry a separate material. A mask also controls where damage appears, using Fields in Cinema 4D or a vertex group in Blender.
