Kartoon Develop Tips showcased how Variants expand base templates to support specific gameplay styles.
Last week's Unreal Fest was packed with exciting reveals, including our first look at The Witcher 4 and the official launch of Unreal Engine 5.6, bringing updates to the animation toolset, mobile development, MetaHuman Creator, and more.
Unreal Engine 5.6 also introduced a major overhaul to its templates, making it easier to get started quickly. The templates have been significantly streamlined, reducing their size to speed up engine downloads while packing in more features. A brand-new option, Variants, extends templates for specific types of gameplay. Whether you're prototyping a side-scrolling platformer, developing an open-world racing game, or creating a top-down strategy, Variants provide a more focused and customized starting point to help bring your vision to life.
Kartoon Develop Tips released a 5-minute video summarizing all nine new templates introduced in Unreal Engine 5.6, including arena shooter, combat system, horror template, vehicle template, and others, designed to jump-start different genres.
To get started, open Unreal Engine 5.6, go to the Games section in the project browser, and pick a base template like First Person, Third Person, Top Down, or Vehicle. Then, use the dropdown menu to select one of the Variants.
