TraceMark should make hackers think twice.

At GDC 2024, Irdeto, the developer of the DRM system Denuvo, presented TraceMark, a new watermarking solution that fights against content leaks. Thanks to its invisible watermark technology, game developers and other professionals can trace leaked content back to its source.

TraceMark integrates into various stages of the game's lifecycle and should discourage leakers "by holding individuals accountable."

"With the launch of TraceMark for Gaming, we are setting a new standard in anti-piracy for the gaming industry. This innovative solution not only marks a significant milestone for Irdeto but also represents a leap forward in protecting the creative and financial investments of game developers worldwide. At Irdeto, we understand the unique challenges faced by the gaming community, and TraceMark is our commitment to ensuring that these valuable assets are safeguarded throughout their lifecycle. We are excited to see the positive impact this will have on the industry," said Niels Haverkorn, SVP of New Markets, Irdeto.

The tech incorporates both invisible and visible watermarking techniques and doesn't disturb production. It comes with a self-service detection portal, which allows developers to verify the presence of watermarks in their content, even if it's changed, blurred, cropped, or compressed.

For maximum protection, game developers can also use SecureDLC against pirate attacks on DLCs and Irdeto's solution for Nintendo Switch games.

The company keeps working on Denuvo despite its poor reputation among players, who say the DRM system decreases performance. Irdeto doesn't agree, claiming there is no perceptible impact on gameplay. "In the pirating/cracking community, we're seen as evil because we're helping DRM exist and we're ensuring people make money out of games."

Perhaps its new TraceMark technology could have helped Capcom whose Dragon's Dogma 2 has recently been streamed ahead of time by a creator who thought there was "nothing illegal" about their ways.
