David Baylis, a renowned Automotive Artist and Technical Marketing Consultant at Epic Games, has presented Trailblazin' – a highly-detailed bike render set up using Unreal Engine 5.3, the most recent version of Epic's flagship real-time 3D creation tool and game engine launched earlier this week.
According to David, the scene was prepared for the upcoming Unreal Fest 2023, where he plans to cover the production process behind the render and discuss the engine's Lumen and Substrate, a new way of authoring materials that gives you more control over the look and feel of objects used in real-time applications, introduced back in May in Unreal Engine 5.2.
"The idea is to show how can Substrate material enhance realism, not only just for clear coat materials, but fabric, skin, and translucent materials," commented the creator. "I knew the character rig was going to add some cool feature to it, and having a complete rigging system inside the engine is super helpful to be able to try different poses."
Additionally, the author utilized Substance 3D software to set up bike dirt and experimented with various Substrate layerings to add dirt on the clear coat material and water drops. The final render was captured in real-time from the viewport with Lumen enabled using NVIDIA RTX A6000 GPU. You can learn more by visiting the artist's LinkedIn page.
