Download This Free Blender-Made 3D Model of Steamboat Willie's Mickey Mouse

The model was set up using flat shading and outlines based on flipped faces.

Less than a week after Disney's 1928 short film Steamboat Willie entered the public domain, allowing artists and game developers to freely use and repurpose the earliest versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, a multitude of creations featuring the world's most famous rodent have already been shared on the internet, encompassing games, artworks, and even horror films akin to the so-bad-it-is-good Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.

Tram Drey, a Freelance Artist and Designer, has recently hopped on the bandwagon by showcasing a 3D model of Steamboat Willie's Mickey Mouse and making said model free to download. Set up in Blender, the model was made using flat shading, with no shadows and lights, only base color, and outlines based on flipped faces. You can learn more and download the model by clicking this link.

Please note that the model is not rigged, so Mickey's ears, usually depicted as two perfect circles regardless of the direction of his head, resemble a mohawk when observed from the front. According to the artist, you are free to rig the ears if you so desire.

Speaking of rigging Mickey's ears, last year, 3D Modeler and Animator Andy Cuccaro showcased a dedicated head rig that can automatically move the character's ears depending on his rotation and position relative to the camera and made said rig available to download.
