DreamWorks' Premo-Inspired Rigging Plug-In For Maya
Zhenggang Deng's meshController can be downloaded for free, along with a demo scene.
meshController by Zhenggang Deng is a C++ plug-in for Maya that provides high-performance surface pinning and mesh deformation tooling for production character rigging. As he shared, the concept is inspired by DreamWorks' Premo rigging system, specifically its approach of placing controls on the character's surface instead of using traditional floating curve shapes.
Previously, Zhenggang Deng released a demo reel showcasing modeling, topology, UVs, and texturing skills he learned from scratch, along with this plug-in. As you can see, instead of traditional curve controls, you interact directly with mesh-based controls that sit on the character's surface. You can hover, select, and manipulate them like any standard Maya control, but they feel integrated into the character's geometry.
Zhenggang released meshController for free, along with the face model used in the demo reel. The plug-in comes with detailed documentation explaining its six node types and five commands, and can be downloaded here.
According to Zhenggang, meshController works with any mesh geometry as a control shape and features live hover highlighting and selection directly in the viewport. It's fully compatible with Maya's move, scale, and rotate manipulators, and is designed primarily for facial rigs. He recommends using mesh controls selectively for main controls rather than replacing every controller in a rig.
