Drone Upgrade System on CRT Computer Made for Indie Game

Jussi-Petteri Kemppainen presented a new retro addition to Drivers of the Apocalypse.

Jussi-Petteri Kemppainen, the principal VFX artist at Remedy Games, showed off a cool retro upgrade tree system he made for his "crazy-desert-grapple-gun-car-battle-game" in development, Drivers of the Apocalypse.

The screen controls drone customization on a CRT computer, and the text blocks will be changed to icons later in the process, according to the creator's X/Twitter.

"The system builds the hierarchical view from a JSON file and saves the acquired upgrades into playerPrefs so they persist. I spent quite a bit of my time working on the JSON -> Unity UI parser and I think I have a pretty decent solution in the game now!"

The monitor can not only upgrade your drones but also help you select levels:

From what I've seen, Drivers of the Apocalypse combines dynamic vehicle battles with Resident Evil-like fixed camera angles in its walking sequences.

Kemppainen offers pieces of his progress on X/Twitter often, and you can also find some screenshots and devlogs on the game's website.
