To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the strategy and construction sim Dwarf Fortress is receiving a major update titled Myth and Magic, which will expand the universe and feature procedural magic systems.
Tarn Adams, co-founder of the game's development studio Bay12, shared an announcement video outlining the update's features. Myth and Magic's procedural systems "go beyond combining spell effects and go straight to the fundamental cosmological makeup of the universe," creating "magical situations that you cannot get any other way."
"It allows your fortresses to pursue magical research that really feels like discovery," Adams shared, also noting that this is the first magic release project that has been in the works for many years. "There will be magic effects that blow things up. There will also be magic materials, enchantments, rituals, ancient ruins, everything that makes fantasy what it is." The release is planned later this year.
