Encanto-Inspired Cracking Concrete Effect Made in Houdini

Pol Villà showcased a procedural setup that allows one to simulate realistic cracks with a single drawn curve.

Senior FX Artist Pol Villà has showcased an impressive cracking concrete effect, created with Houdini, rendered in Mantra, and compiled with Nuke. Inspired by Disney's Encanto, the project aimed to recreate the technique used for the animated movie and make it look more realistic and detailed. According to the creator, the procedural setup created for the project allows one to simulate the cracks with a single drawn curve.

"The setup involves using PDG to cache and render the effect, employing the Axiom Solver for simulating smoke, implementing a custom recursive fracturing algorithm to prevent manifold geometry issues and a custom displacement map shader," commented the creator.
