Explore Stylized LookDev Pipeline with Serie from Frieren as Example

Surfacing Artist at Netflix Animation Studios Mani Salguero shares Blender and Substance 3D Painter project files and videos.

In case you missed it

An interview with the artist on creating the character

Mani Salguero, Surfacing Artist at Netflix Animation Studios and 3D Art Instructor, released a learning path offering an insightful look at his stylized take on Frieren's Serie. Earlier, the artist joined 80 Level to discuss the workflow behind creating the character, and with a new project, he shares Blender and Substance 3D Painter project files and videos demonstrating the pipeline.

With the package, you can study the layer structure and LookDev workflow behind the take on the character by exploring source files directly. In addition, Salguero shares a time-lapse video covering texturing and a dedicated video walkthrough with commentary explaining how the project files and shaders work.

The content of the Serie Stylized Character Look Dev Pipeline is the following:

  • Project Files: Blender File (Geometry + Shaders) and Substance 3D Painter File (.spp). (Supports Blender 5.1 and Substance 3D Painter 12.1)

  • File Walkthrough Video: Step-by-step breakdown explaining how the project files, shaders, and texturing structure are set up.

  • Full Process Video: Comprehensive video walkthrough of the painting and Look Dev process in Substance 3D Painter.

Please note that the product requires basic knowledge of Substance 3D Painter.

Previously, the artist shared a tutorial covering his full painterly workflow of texturing stylized characters in Substance 3D Painter, based on the example of the artist's Arcane-style version of Ellie from The Last of Us 2.
