Fascinating Particle Simulation Created with WebGPU

Take a look at this mesmerizing particle visualization created by Artist Yi-Wen Lin using a technique that fakes a realistic particle glow effect by saving particle velocity data on a 3D grid, built with WebGPU. The particles themselves are driven by a fluid simulation.
The artist explained that the work was an experiment, which was created using WebGPU with the aim of exploring new capabilities that are difficult or nearly impossible to achieve in standard WebGL. "I've always been fascinated by global illumination and dynamic lighting effects, so I wanted to see how far I could push real-time lighting in the browser," Yi-Wen Lin shared.
According to the artist, particle velocities were stored in a 3D texture based on their spatial positions, using that volume data to calculate a cheap, real-time illumination effect. The fascinating result shows how WebGPU brings real-time effects into the browser.
