Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi shared why the development team continues using Unreal Engine 4 instead of switching to Unreal Engine 5.
Speaking with 4Gamer (via Nintendo Everything), Naoki Hamaguchi explained that sticking with UE4 would allow the team to release the game in a shorter timeframe, which is the "best thing to do" from "a business perspective and a player perspective." According to the director, the team had already used custom solutions based on UE4, and rebuilding everything in UE5 would take much more time.
Hamaguchi also noted that during the development of Rebirth, the team built custom rendering systems comparable to Nanite, achieving a similar level of visual quality to UE5.
Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of the remake trilogy, at the 2026 Summer Game Fest. The game will launch in spring 2027 on all major platforms.
