Final Fantasy VII Remake Producer Hints at More Adaptations & New Games
Yoshinori Kitase says Square Enix is more likely to invest in new titles, but he doesn't rule out more remakes.
Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy producer Yoshinori Kitase, who also directed the 1997 original, has hinted at more adaptations of Final Fantasy games and suggested that Square Enix is likely interested in creating original IPs in the future.
In a talk with IGN, Kitase shared his thoughts about the company's plans for future adaptations. According to him, Final Fantasy VII Remake explored the world of the game much more than the original did, which makes other projects based on it possible:
"Given the fact that we created this game, the remake of Final Fantasy VII, which explored the world of Final Fantasy VII way more than the original version, I think that it would be nice to have in the future games or TV series inspired by the story of Final Fantasy. And I don't see why that should not be a possibility in the future."
However, he said that the studio is more likely to focus on original stories and titles:
"I think that mainly, we are more likely to invest in new titles and new games, but at the same time, for example, this time with the [Final Fantasy VII] remake, there was me and other creators who worked on the original game, which we had really strong feelings towards."
Kitase explained that the team wanted to create a new project related to one of the classic games, so that new players could experience and discover the "appeal of this game," as those who played the original did. "There might be different cases like this one where the company is willing to invest in remaking old projects and other kinds of games like it happened this time," he said.
Kitase also said that he does not expect to work on another remake anytime soon. He said he felt "very fulfilled" by Final Fantasy VII Remake, and for now he wants to create new games. At the same time, he noted that many people inside the company and among fans have been asking for a Final Fantasy VI remake, adding: "So who knows?"
The remake trilogy began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020, followed by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024. The third and final chapter, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is set to launch on April 8, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 4, and Director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that using UE4 would let the team release the game in a shorter timeframe, since it had already built custom solutions based on UE4, and rebuilding everything in UE5 would take much more time.
