GDC Talk: Tips and Tricks on Organizing Houdini Workflow

Level artist Thomas Tobin shared a handful of tips and tricks on how to organize your workflow in Houdini, ways to integrate various methods into your tools, and how to create a python panel in the software.

Thomas Tobin did a quick talk where he shared his insights into working in Houdini, revealed a few useful methods to add to tools inside of the software, and explained how to create your first python panel.

A few details from the talk:

  • The benefit of PyPanels and real-time showcase on how they work and how to create them from start to finish, including adjusting the Python Panel Editor, starter codes, creating your own object, and more
  • The importance of icon strips and their creation process
  • Working with color palettes and ways to use them to organize your workflow inside of the software
  • Tips on ramps, layouts, random shortcuts, shelf tool nodes, and so on

Thomas Tobin works at Ubisoft Montreal and creates procedural tools that help optimize the workflow for the artists in the creation of any type of assets.
