Hackers Reportedly Leaked Over 1 TB of Disney Data
Ethical hackers standing up for artists or something more ordinary?
Disney
Disney must have had it hard these past several days – all thanks to a data breach that was caused by a hacker group called NullBulge, which reportedly leaked over 1 TB of files and Slack messages on July 12.
The "hacktivist" group claims to have shared "almost 10,000 channels, every message and file possible, unreleased projects, raw images, code, logins, links to internal API/web pages, and more" (via Hackread). It then went to X/Twitter to announce its achievement: "Disney has had their entire dev slack dumped. 1.1TiB of files and chat messages. Anything we could get our hands on, we downloaded and packaged up. Want to see what goes on behind the doors? Go grab it."
But why did this whole mess happen? You see, NullBulge seemingly takes a stand on artists' side. It planted malware in a Stable Diffusion extension not so long ago, stating the group attacks sites and people that commit art theft, promote cryptocurrency, spread AI-generated art, steal from Patreon or similar platforms that support artists, and so on.
So which of these has Disney done? It has been criticized for not paying royalties to some of its authors, and NullBulge decided it was time to pay for that.
"Disney was our target due to how it handles artist contracts, its approach to AI, and its pretty blatant disregard for the consumer," the group said (via CNN), convinced negotiating would be useless.
"If we said ‘Hello Disney, we have all your slack data’ they would instantly lock down and try to take us out. In a duel, you better fire first."
For now, Disney is "investigating this matter", and I wonder if this attack will be effective against unfair payment management.
Earlier, companies like Sony, NVIDIA, and Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware, also suffered from hacker groups, albeit different ones.
