Developer Mitchell Hynes recently shared his browser-based version of the first Halo game.
The unofficial web version of 2001 Halo: Combat Evolved features working split-screen co-op and multiplayer for up to 128 players. The browser version does not include the Gearbox version of Master Chief. According to Hynes, within five hours, about 20,000 games across 115 countries and territories were played, with an average of 94 FPS.
Following the popularity of the project, the developer shared a video explaining how the web version works. The port of Halo: Combat Evolved for the original Xbox was first brought to Windows, Linux, and Android by Cybersecurity. It is based on the decompilation of the Bnunu's project, which itself is a fork of punpckhdq's Halo decompilation. The dev also noted that the build doesn't play well on mobile devices.

In a Reddit discussion, players have been sharing mostly positive comments and creating lobbies: "I can't believe how good it feels to play!"
Previously, another classic game was brought to PC – the OldUnreal team made Unreal Tournament 2004 playable on modern computers, and the project was even approved by Epic.
The Halo franchise, started in 2001 with the aforementioned first-person shooter Combat Evolved, later received many new entries, including Halo 2 in 2004, Halo 3 in 2007, the 2012 Halo 4, and the 2015 Halo 5: Guardians, with the latest being the 2026 Halo: Campaign Evolved – a remake of the story component of the first 2001 game. Currently, the franchise is undergoing structural changes and is moving under Bethesda's leadership.
