Hideo Kojima's OD Will Include a System for Players Who Get Too Scared

The game will feature a new system unlike anything seen in the developer's previous titles.

The Xbox Showcase has brought us a wealth of news, such as the upcoming live-action of Sea of Thieves, which we reported yesterday. Another exciting reveal from the annual event is the new details about the upcoming cinematic horror game OD, also known as Overdose, from the creator of Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima.

The game was announced in 2023 during The Game Awards. OD is in development by Kojima Productions in collaboration with Xbox and Oscar- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele, best known for feature films Get Out and Us. The cast includes Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and the late Udo Kier.

The specifics of OD's plot have not been disclosed yet and remain shrouded in secrecy; the only thing known is that it will be a chilling horror game. However, Hideo Kojima shared (via Entertainment Weekly) that OD will be a new kind of experience, distinct from his previous titles. The developer had the game's concept since working on Death Stranding 1, and OD will introduce an entirely new game system:

"I wanted to do something new. I wanted to do something different," he says. "I had this OD concept since I was working on DS1, and I was working on it just by myself. I can't reveal much detail, but it's something that no one has ever seen before. A new game system."

The game may well prove to be something truly new for the gaming world:

"I pitched to many people, to the big companies, and also to the up-and-coming companies. All of them said the same thing," Kojima says. "They said that I'm crazy, and that they really don't understand the concept – that they will not be able to do it."

The horror elements of the game will also introduce features rarely seen in the genre. Kojima shared that his goal was to make the single-player experience "as scary as possible." He also gave thought to players who may find intense horror difficult to handle: "For those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going." This sounds like a welcome and considerate addition, and if you are a horror fan who loves the genre but finds it hard to push through its scariest moments and closes eyes when the movie gets too scary, the feature might be something you need. "I can't say much more, because it'll give too much of a hint on the system, and I could get in trouble for saying too much," Kojima continues, leaving players to speculate and await further details.

The new details also include a screenshot with the atmosphere highly reminiscent of P.T. – something fans of the genre are sure to appreciate:
