Homeworld 3's Dev Blackbird Once Again Laid Off Its Staff

It's the second time in the past 6 months.

Blackbird Interactive, the developer behind the upcoming Homeworld 3, has confirmed the second round of layoffs that took place in the last 6 months.

According to the statement given to GamesIndustry.biz, the studio had to let go of some people because of the economic pressure Blackbird has been facing.

"Due to economic pressures outside of our control, we had to take the unfortunate step of separating from some friends," a studio representative stated.

Understanding the sudden challenges developers face when losing their jobs, Blackbird is providing extended benefits and severance to help with the transition.

"We looked at multiple ways of avoiding this and regretfully other options weren't viable. Because the affected team members are our BBI family, we want to help position them well for this next stage of their careers. We're offering a suite of extended benefits and severance to help ease this transition," continued the representative.

This is the second job cut since August 2023, when the studio announced the unfortunate layoff of 41 developers due to the cancellation of a few undisclosed projects.

2023 was a tough year for the game industry, and the new 2024 year seems to be even worse. As we reported in January, over 5 thousand people lost their jobs in the past month, and this number of job cuts alone is 57% of the total layoffs recorded last year.
