Learn How to Visualize Stylized Fire in Blender with This Tutorial

Mardanium combines realistic and stylized elements to create a high-quality cinematic look.

Learn how to visualize animated stylized fire like in the image and video above with a YouTube tutorial from 3D Artist Mardanium. To create these high-quality cinematic renders, the artist utilized Blender with rendering completed in Eevee and Substance 3D Painter.

The creator explained that they used the Kuwahara compositor node and stylize filter on textures using Substance 3D Painter while preserving realistic elements, such as reflections and normals.

Check out the tutorial, covering the entire process of creating the NPR fire, from creating a mesh to finalizing the image:

The animation sequence shown in the Reddit post was created by Mardanium as a submission for Pwnisher's community challenge, Rampage Rally, hosted by 3D and VFX Artist Clinton Jones. Before, we showcased some of the creative works crafted for the challenge and spoke with Ted Heemskerk, the second-place winner of the competition, about the details of creating his work.

As for the Kuwahara node, it uses the Kuwahara filter algorithm to produce a distinctive painterly, brushstroke-like effect. Before, we covered the Kuwahara filter in more detail. For example, check out Round3d.pixel's watercolor-style scenes and Tong Ping Diary's compositing setup:
