Malware Attacks Surge via Fake GTA VI Beta & Download Keys
Read the investigation and advice on how to avoid a data breach.
GTA VI is officially one of the most highly awaited games in years – it even won the Most Anticipated Game award at TGA 2025, and it continues to fuel rumors and fan theories. Unfortunately, such hype also opens the door for those looking to exploit fans' excitement over the title.
NordVPN has traced a wave of malware and scam campaigns that target Android and PC users and shared its investigation into the attackers' methods. They use fake installers, non-existent beta keys, and credential-harvesting phishing pages – cloning well-known piracy sites, distributing trojanized game repacks, and deploying Android adware disguised as a "GTA 6 Beta." On top of that, hundreds of phishing pages are circulating, targeting Rockstar Social Club accounts via fake login forms hosted on legitimate platforms like GitHub and Vercel.
"GTA VI is one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history, and that level of public excitement is exactly what criminals look for," says Marijus Briedis, CTO at NordVPN. "When people are desperate to get early access to something, their guard comes down. That's the window attackers exploit."
Scam sites promise exclusive beta keys for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, funneling users through a short form and a fake bot-verification step before pushing them to subscribe to paid services or download potentially unwanted applications.
Threat actors have deployed clones of well-known piracy and repack sites, including fake versions of FitGirl, DODI, and ElAmigos, to distribute trojanized repacks targeting Windows users, disguising malware as legitimate game files.
One example that NordVPN describes is a malicious package presenting itself as a legitimate game installer, but once run by a user, it quietly activates a hidden malicious file in the background, disguised as a standard NVIDIA graphics driver component. The file can then modify the device's memory, download additional malware, and connect to external servers to receive further instructions.
Another attack targets Android users through a fake app titled "GTA 6 Beta". The application uses authentic-looking GTA branding, but there's no actual game inside; instead, the app silently serves full-screen ads and redirects users to external pages that pressure them into subscribing to paid services or downloading further malware.
- Avoid third-party download sites for any game content. Legitimate game files are distributed exclusively through official storefronts like the PlayStation Store, Xbox Marketplace, or Rockstar's own platform. Any unofficial site should be treated as a red flag.
- Treat beta key offers with skepticism. Legitimate betas for major titles are announced through official channels only. Any site asking you to verify your identity or subscribe to a service to claim access is a scam, regardless of how convincing it looks.
- Check URLs carefully before logging in. Always check the URL before entering your login details anywhere. Official game platforms and storefronts will never ask you to sign in through a third-party site.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on November 19, 2026. According to analyst estimates, the new installment of the Rockstar iconic franchise could sell more than 25 million copies within its first 24 hours.
