Analysts Say GTA 6 Could Sell Over 25M Copies on Day One Amid "Terrifying" Expectations

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick admits the pressure surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented as analysts predict a record-breaking launch.

In case you missed it

Rockstar is working hard on GTA 6

According to recent analyst estimates via Bloomberg, Grand Theft Auto VI could sell more than 25 million copies within its first 24 hours, positioning it as one of the largest entertainment launches in history.

The projections come as anticipation continues to build around Rockstar Games’ long-awaited follow-up to its record-breaking predecessor.

The staggering forecast arrives alongside comments from Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, who described the expectations surrounding the release as “terrifying.” Reportedly intense crunch likely increases the stakes across the board.

"I think here our goal is to deliver to consumers something that's never been experienced before. Being on the sidelines but pretty close to the front of the sidelines is very, very exciting. And terrifying. Because the expectations are so high.

...Development costs have gone up and up. And we really do aim to deliver the highest quality entertainment on Earth. And that is costly. And AI influence is not withstanding. We haven't seen those costs decline yet. Maybe we will. Maybe we won't."

The context is hard to overstate. Grand Theft Auto V remains one of the best-selling games of all time, generating billions in revenue and maintaining a long tail through its online component. That success has effectively raised the bar for its successor, with both players and analysts expecting not just a hit, but a generational leap.

Despite the optimism reflected in sales forecasts, Zelnick has reiterated that Take-Two does not take success for granted and the company continues to invest heavily in development.

At the same time, the scale of hype surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI introduces an inherent risk. With expectations this high, even a critically acclaimed release could face scrutiny from audiences eager for something truly groundbreaking.

The conversation around the game has increasingly shifted beyond traditional success metrics, centering instead on whether it can redefine what players expect from open-world design and interactive storytelling.
