Autodesk has shipped Maya 2023.2, an updated version of the company's flagship 3D animation, modeling, and rendering software. The newly-released update focuses on improving animation and rigging performance, bringing novel features designed to simplify workflows, save time, and enhance the overall experience. On top of that, the new version of the software comes with improvements to the Bifrost, USD, and Maya to Arnold plug-ins.

With the update being focused on improving animation and rigging workflows, the new version of Maya includes several enhancements to the Evaluation Manager and new features such as GPU Readback that will help minimize graph rebuilds resulting in reduced lag times and allowing to better harness GPU evaluation for improved playback performance.

Several new features have been added to the Evaluation Toolkit, allowing you to diagnose deformer evaluation more easily for complex graphs. This includes new options for improved visual graph output, a new GPU Outliner for more visibility and control over deformer evaluation, and enhancements to the Evaluation HUD for better insight into GPU Override status.

The update also brings tons of improvements to the Blue Pencil tool, including new opacity, size, and hardness falloff ramps, the ability to choose from a collection of useful brush ramp presets or save your own custom brush presets for each of these settings, enhancements to interactive performance, and support for touch sensitivity on tablets.

New tangent angle and weight input fields have been added to the Graph Editor toolbar. These fields give you precise control over tangents, letting you change angles and weights on multiple selected keys at the same time.

And here's a list of some of the minor features that the update brings:

  • UVPin, Proximity Pin, and skinCluster improvements
  • Bifrost 2.5.1.0, which provides new USD nodes
  • New Joint Draw style
  • MtoA 5.2.0, which provides improved volume rendering, improvements to the USD procedural and the Hydra Render Delegate, as well as an improved viewport experience.
  • Substance 2.3.0, which includes the ability to enable physical size.
