Microsoft Wants to Add PC Games to Xbox Cloud Gaming

Internal emails shed light on some business in the company.

The FTC vs. Microsoft trial on Activision Blizzard acquisition keeps giving. Internal emails from July 2021 reveal that Microsoft is (or at least was) planning to stream PC games over the cloud.

Right now, its Xbox Cloud Gaming offers only console titles, but adding computer releases could open many doors for the company. According to the correspondence, Microsoft is working on using Azure servers to make it possible.

In the email chain, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella contacted Xbox chief Phil Spencer, Kareem Choudhry, head of cloud gaming at Microsoft, and Sarah Bond, head of Xbox creator experience, about the rumors of Google making Stadia a white-label cloud gaming service allowing developers to run their games on it.

“Seems like they will have a leg up because their stuff is more generic Linux VMs + Network.... But I am assuming we will do the same for Game Pass PC – right?” asked Nadella (via The Verge).

Spencer replied that yes, the company is already looking for a PC-on-cloud solution with Azure.

“Google has the ability to reuse their Linux cloud hardware and yes as we stream PC native games from an Azure GPU SKU we would have more re-use scenarios to recoup costs,” he said.

Choudhry then confirmed that he and Bond are in partnership with Jason Zander, Microsoft's executive vice president, and his team to drive a suitable Azure SKU "as part of a series that will serve the customer demand we see externally for IAAS and to run our xCloud PC streaming stack."

Naturally, Microsoft's desire to stream PC games might have owned over the years, but I doubt it. In April, Microsoft signed a 10-year partnership deal with EE, a mobile network operator company, to explore cloud gaming and "bring PC games built by Activision Blizzard, following the acquisition, and Xbox to EE customers".

So it looks like playing PC games over loud is just a matter of time.
