If you are trying to avoid AI in your life, my condolences. Microsoft announced that it would start automatically installing its Copilot AI to computers that have the 365 suite next month.
"Starting in October 2025, Microsoft will begin automatically installing the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices that have Microsoft 365 desktop client apps," it said in a message center update (via Bleeping Computer).
Microsoft claims that this change "simplifies access to Copilot and ensures users can easily discover and engage with productivity-enhancing features." If you didn't want it, well, sad.
While system admins can prevent the automatic install, personal users don't seem to have this option. Thankfully, at least systems in the European Economic Area will be excluded from the update.
This initiative is not surprising at all when you think about it. They made a whole new button for keyboards for the feature, did you think they'd stop at that? Plus, Microsoft has never been famous for its respect for consent and free will: just remember when it decided to make Recall, a feature that takes screenshots of everything you do, uninstallable. (Don't worry, they fixed it later.)
Microsoft's obsession with AI is obvious, and it's not the only company that puts all its efforts into the tech. However, I doubt this forceful decision will find many fans.
