NetEase Reportedly Filed Lawsuit Against Blizzard

The Chinese company is asking for $43.5 million as compensation for discontinued games and services.

NetEase and Blizzard's split was a massive deal with casualties in the form of a World of Warcraft Orc statue. After 14 years of partnership, the companies couldn't agree on the terms of their contract, so Blizzard's games, including World of Warcraft, Overwatch 2, and Diablo III, were discontinued in China in January.

However, this is not the end of the story as NetEase reportedly filed a lawsuit against Blizzard Entertainment, demanding ¥300 million (about $43.5 million) in refunds for "discontinued games and services to more than 1.12 million players", according to Sina Technology (via VGC).

NetEase also wants compensation for unsold merchandise and deposits on undeveloped games as well as several "unequal provisions favoring Blizzard Entertainment" in the licensing agreements.

Last month, The New York Times conducted an investigation and stated that the reason behind the partnership's end was connected to China's regulations, which made NetEase ask Activision Blizzard to provide additional data to the regulator. This, in turn, raised concerns about undermining Activision's deal with Microsoft.
