Nightdive Assures Fans It'll Do At Least As Much, If not More Following the Atari Deal

The studio says it can preserve its autonomy and continue reviving cult classics, following its acquisition by Atari.

Last week, Atari announced that it was purchasing developer Nightdive Studios, the creator of retro remakes, including Doom 64 and Quake re-releases, which is also now working on the System Shock remake.

Given Atari's current state and its attempt to keep up with controversial trends such as cryptocurrencies and NFTs, players have expressed considerable skepticism in their reactions to the acquisition.

In a conversation with PC Gamer,  Larry Kuperman, the director of business development at Nightdive, dismissed the concerns raised by fans. He asserted that the present-day Atari upholds the same principles as Nightdive has always done. Kuperman went on to mention that the two companies share common objectives and that Nightdive will retain its autonomy while continuing to pursue its passions.

Regarding remasters and re-releases like Rise of the Triad Ludicrous Edition, Kuperman emphasized that there would be more of such games in the future. He reassured players that they do not need to worry about Nightdive abandoning such projects after the merger with Atari.

"We're going to continue to go forward," the executive said. "I've watched a lot of the comments on Twitter, and people have said, 'Oh, they're so disappointed that Nightdive won't be doing this and won't be doing that.' And in fact there was a whole long list, but two of the titles that were mentioned that people are disappointed that we're not going to be doing, we're doing already. They're already 75% of the way complete."

"We believe that through this partnership with Atari, not only will we be doing as much as we ever did, but we'll be doing more of it," he added.

Nightdive's next major release will be the System Shock remake. Most recently, the developer revealed that the game will be released on May 30, 2023. It will first arrive on PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store and later will be made available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, as well as Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
