The financial report doesn't include numbers for the game, but this conclusion raises questions.
Ninja Theory
Ninja Theory has published a financial report for the year that ended on June 30, 2023. There, it mentions not only the numbers for that period but also its latest game, which wasn't released at the time.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 launched in May 2024 and could not attract as many players as the developer or publisher undoubtedly hoped for. It saw a 3,982 concurrent player peak on Steam, which is criminally low for such an anticipated game. Analytics' data suggests it ranked 37th in May in US full-game dollar sales and came 21st on Xbox. Many fans blame the disappointing result on poor marketing.
However, Ninja Theory doesn't seem to think it was a failure. The financial report mentions the "successful release of Hellblade 2," which made players wonder if the sales are higher than we all think. Or, and I think this is closer to the truth, this just means the launch went smoothly, without much trouble.
"Following the successful release of Hellblade 2, Ninja Theory will now concentrate their efforts on various future projects."
One such project is Mara, an experimental horror title focused on mental health issues, which was greenlit in May. Now that Hellblade 2 is done, Ninja Theory has time and space for marketing for Mara, and I hope the team, together with Xbox Game Studios, does a better job promoting it this time. If not, I'm afraid it might meet the fate of Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks, shut down by Microsoft. Well, at least Tango was bought by KRAFTON, so there is always a new chance.
Especially since the studio saw a profit of £2.9 million last year, according to the document.
