OBSKUR: First Broadcasting Software Built on Unreal Engine 5

We asked the creator of OBSKUR Andranik Aslanyan about the live streaming and mocap suite, its tools, strengths, and benefits as well as the Unreal Engine 5 experience.

We interviewed Andranik Aslanyan, the creator of OBSKUR, to get more insight.

Introduction

Hey everyone! I'm Andranik Aslanyan, and for the past 13 years, I've worked in the game development and animation industry. I've had the pleasure of launching titles across all major consoles and PC platforms, with some selling millions of units worldwide.

Along with my two talented co-founders, we took our collective experience and created OBSKUR, a cutting-edge streaming software built on Unreal Engine 5.

During our research, we discovered a significant market opportunity in VTubing. Although it was predominantly popular in Japan at the time, we saw the potential for growth and believed we could make it more accessible to a global audience with user-friendly tools and reasonably priced hardware.

Our dedication and innovation caught the attention of Movella Inc, the parent company of Xsens, a leading IMU-based motion capture solution used in iconic movies like Avatar and numerous AAA video games. By collaborating with Movella, we developed a new line of equipment tailored for streamers, with long battery life, comfort, and accurate motion capture.

OBSKUR

The OBSKUR journey began as a tool specifically designed for VTubing. However, as we progressed, we realized there was immense potential to enhance various forms of streaming content production. As a result, OBSKUR evolved into a comprehensive broadcasting suite, catering to both webcam and VTuber content. It empowers streamers to interact with their audience, monitor engagement, and generate revenue, all driven by the Unreal Engine.

OBSKUR offers a suite of advanced tools designed to cater to both new and experienced streamers. Here are the main strengths and benefits of our project:

1. Stream From One Desktop Application

We noticed as streamers are trying to stand out more and create a more interesting interactive experience for their viewers, often they are managing more than one application for their interactions, environments, broadcast software, motion capture, or VTubing. We wanted to create a one-application solution that makes it easier for streamers to focus on what they do best, entertaining their audience without having to worry about juggling a bunch of applications. We also created OBSKUR's broadcasting tools to provide a familiar yet improved experience for streamers and added built-in chat moderation tools to further streamline content creation and offer a seamless experience.

2. Built on Unreal Engine 5

We built OBSKUR to allow you to unleash your creativity with our easy-to-use 3D environment creator coupled with our digital asset marketplace. We wanted people to be able to create limitless, dynamic environments with top-tier rendering, interactive physics, real-time lighting, and animations without having to worry about needing technical knowledge or 3D modeling skills. Our asset marketplace grants users easy access to a wide variety of assets for building 3D environments and audience interactions. This resource simplifies the process of creating unique and engaging streaming content.

3. VRM Character Importer

At launch, those who have VRM characters will be able to import their models on day one into OBSKUR and enjoy the same features that they’re familiar with in other applications and more. Compatible with advanced face and body tracking via our OBSKUR Mocap, Apple devices with Face ID, and VMC protocol.

4. Flexible Streaming Options

OBSKUR opens a world of creative possibilities for streamers. You can now composite your IRL self into a custom 3D environment, use a full 3D avatar, or stick to IRL streaming while incorporating our OBSKUR Twitch extension for engaging audience interactions. Streamers can create multiple scenes and switch between them live, based on the needs of their content.

5. OBSKUR Twitch Extension

Our custom OBSKUR Twitch extension allows streamers to generate additional revenue and boost interactivity while providing viewers with an unforgettable, interactive experience. Streamers can easily install the extension through Twitch and set up custom 3D, physics-enabled interactions within the OBSKUR app. For the audience, using the extension is simple and rewarding, enabling them to trigger various effects that enhance their viewing experience and strengthen their bond with the streamer. 

6. Mocap Made Easy

We noticed there’s a place in the market for high-quality motion capture that’s priced for the consumer market. So, we teamed up with our sister company Xsens to design our mocap hardware dubbed The Mocap Box. The Mocap Box includes the OBSKUR Upper Body Mocap set with 9 Xsens sensors, washable gloves, and a strap set. We think The Mocap Box is ideal for virtual content creators who want a reliable motion capture system that has a long range, high update rate, and long battery life. We also acknowledge that creators might have other mocap sets, so we’re making sure to integrate with other leading mocap solutions as well.

Our primary goal is to lower the barrier of entry for all kinds of streaming content by offering features that assist streamers in managing and optimizing their performance while emphasizing overall ease of use. Combining these features, OBSKUR presents a comprehensive and user-friendly solution for streamers seeking to elevate their content and deepen their connection with their audience.

Using 3D Scenes & Environments from Unreal Engine 5

OBSKUR is designed to offer a seamless experience for users, regardless of their technical background. For those familiar with games that allow building environments through drag-and-drop, OBSKUR provides a similar user-friendly experience. However, we also cater to those who seek more advanced customization abilities.

Users who desire to create fully custom environments or interactions can utilize the Unreal Engine editor to create something truly unique. Our packager plugin enables them to export their custom projects directly into OBSKUR, ensuring a smooth integration of personalized content.

In addition to the customization options, streamers can access our marketplace, which offers a wealth of content, including both our own creations and user-generated assets. This resource helps users jump-start their streaming experience, providing the tools they need to create engaging 3D scenes and environments using the power of Unreal Engine 5.
