People Can Fly Cancels Two Games, Including Square Enix's Project Gemini

An undisclosed number of developers have been laid off as a result.

After conducting two rounds of layoffs in January and December 2024, which affected a total of 150 employees, and shutting down its AAA co-op action-adventure game, Project Dagger, game development and porting studio People Can Fly continues to face turbulence, now canceling two of its prohects and firing an undisclosed number of workers in an effort to "significantly regroup as a studio."

People Can Fly

In the studio's latest statement, CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski announced the cancellation of Project Biftrost and, more intriguingly, Project Gemini, developed by People Can Fly under a work-for-hire model for Square Enix, a gaming giant they previously worked with on Outriders.

According to Wojciechowski, the suspension of Gemini is "a consequence of the fact that the Publisher has not presented us with a draft of the subsequent content rider to the Publishing Agreement covering the terms and conditions of further milestones on project Gemini and the lack of communication from the Publisher as to its willingness to continue or terminate the Gemini project," suggesting that the cancellation stems from Square Enix's uncooperativeness rather than PCF's internal issues.

The shutdown of Bifrost, on the other hand, comes as a result of "the above and the analysis of the Group's cash flow, which showed a lack of prospects for securing organizational resources and funds necessary to continue the production and release of this project." Consequently, the CEO states, they must "significantly regroup as a studio and scale down our teams," with the exact number of "scaled-down" workers remaining undisclosed.
