The PlayStation 5 has reached a milestone of 84.2 million copies, according to Sony's recent report.
In the financial results for Q2 2025, a period that ended on September 30, 2025, the company announced that PlayStation 5 hardware sales reached 3.9 million units during the quarter. Combined with overall previous sales, the console has now achieved 84.2 million units in total since its launch on November 12, 2020, marking a significant milestone on its anniversary. Last year, PlayStation 5 sold 3.8 million copies over the same period, which represents a slight increase in 2025 sales over the same time span in 2024.
The number of monthly active users on the PlayStation Network reached 119 million, also showing an increase from 116 million in Q2 2024. Sony noted that sales in the game software and network service segment are steadily growing and expressed expectations that this trend would continue.
As for the game sales, the most prominent results were shown by Ghost of Yotei, which sold 3.3 million copies as of November 2, within a month after its release. Sony said that the game became "a major hit like its predecessor," Ghost of Tsushima.
The PlayStation 5 sales have shown solid results, especially considering the recent increase in the retail price of the console. Also, as noted by The Gamer, PS5 outsold the Game Boy Advance and the Xbox 360, which means that PS5 surpassed the sales of every Xbox console. However, as spotted by IGN, the last official figure for Xbox, which amounted to over 84 million units in global retail, appeared in June 2014. The console was discontinued two years later in April 2016, and during that period, its sales probably increased compared to the 2014 number.
