Sony Follows Nintendo's Example, Increases PlayStation 5 Consoles' Prices

The standard console now costs $550, while the Pro version is priced at $750.

With Nintendo and Xbox opening the floodgates for video games to cost $80 for a standard edition, gaming continues to get increasingly expensive in 2025. Joining them is Sony, the next gaming giant to hike the prices – but not for its software, but for hardware instead.

According to the company's recent statement, they have made "the difficult decision" to raise the recommended retail price of PlayStation 5 consoles in the US starting August 21, citing "a challenging economic environment" as the reason for the increase.

Going forward, the standard PlayStation 5 console will have a recommended retail price of $550, up from $500, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will cost $500, up from $450, and the Pro version will be priced at $750, up from $700. Sony notes that the recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged and that they have no other price changes to announce for additional markets.

Earlier this month, Nintendo also raised the prices of its hardware, increasing the cost of original Nintendo Switch consoles by $30-$50, depending on the model. The changes also impacted controllers, including those for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, as well as other accessories such as the Alarmo clock.
