Pokémon Winds & Waves Announced Exclusively for Switch 2 in 2027
Pokémon Gen 10 begins in 2027 with two new games exclusively for Switch 2 and an all-new region.
The Pokémon Company and Game Freak have officially revealed Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, the next mainline entries in the long-running RPG franchise. Announced during the latest Pokémon Presents broadcast celebrating the series’ 30th anniversary, the new titles mark the beginning of Generation 10 and are currently scheduled to launch worldwide in 2027 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
"These new titles feature an open world to explore, with beautiful, windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves. The Pokémon that live in harmony with this region’s lush environment have developed their own unique ecosystems. During this adventure, you’ll team up with all kinds of Pokémon to overcome both the difficult road ahead and even the forces of nature that block your path at times." - The Pokémon Company's Announcement
In the teaser trailer, we see a first look at the new generation, confirming a brand-new setting, a trio of starter Pokémon, and what appears to be a more expansive world than previous mainline entries. The games follow Gen 9's Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (2022) and represent the franchise’s first mainline entries built specifically for the Switch 2 hardware.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is also part of Gen 9, and it was released in 2025.
The teaser suggests that Winds and Waves will take place in a tropical island region, featuring multiple islands, dense jungles, caves, and underwater environments that players can explore. Early footage hints at a large interconnected world designed to encourage exploration across land and sea.
As with every new Pokémon generation, the reveal also introduced three new starter creatures:
Browt: Grass-type
Pombon: Fire-type
Gecqua: Water-type
While gameplay details remain limited for now, the trailer shows fully modeled characters and Pokémon moving through more detailed environments than previous games in the series. This suggests the developers are leaning further into large-scale open-world exploration introduced in recent entries.
One of the biggest surprises from the announcement is that Pokémon Winds and Waves will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, skipping the original Nintendo Switch entirely. That decision signals a major generational transition for the franchise and could allow Game Freak to take fuller advantage of improved hardware capabilities.
