Projection Illusion That Allows You to Explore 3D Objects Using Face Tracking

Ian Curtis's setup could open many new possibilities.

XR developer Ian Curtis presented an unusual way of looking at static 3D objects, making it more realistic by linking the view to head movement. He made an off-axis projection demo of a shoe with added face tracking, which turns the object based on where your head is, creating an illusion that can almost make you believe the shoe is really in front of you.

The setup was made with MediaPipe and Three.js, which you might have seen in projects by Vasant VermaSteven Mark KüblerKat Zhang, and David Katz, who enjoy manipulating objects and particles in virtual spaces.

You can check out Curtis's shoe illusion here and see his other works on X/Twitter. Some of his ideas include turning a living room into a Game Boy level and using the world around as a basis for an AR game.
