How League of Legends Classic started

Riot announced that its nostalgic mode, League of Legends Classic, will end its current run in January 2027.
In a recent post, the studio shared that League Classic will be available until the end of Season 3 of 2026, after which its current run will end. Riot explained that a lot of players have been revisiting "the olden days" in Classic, but "most have gone back to other parts of League." The studio also aims to bring Classic back, but probably in a different form, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions.
Riot will add windowed queues, open only at set times, in some regions where an especially large number of players returned to modern modes, leading to longer queue times and larger MMR discrepancies for Classic there. Classic Custom games will also be available at all times, in all regions. Apart from this, Riot is issuing refunds for content that will no longer be usable. More details can be found on the Support page. The studio will also release the Act II Classic Battle Pass in 26.21 with a free track only. From 26.21 onwards, the Classic store will only contain Champions, Runes, and Rune Pages.
Until the mode ends, Riot is adding more champions to Classic. Irelia, Karma, Quinn, Aatrox, and Caitlyn arrived in patch 26.20, and Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim, and Lucian will follow in 26.21. New champions will keep coming every patch through 26.23, including Volibear, Urgot, and Udyr, who placed in the top three of the most recent Council poll.
"This game mode was a true labor of love from so many Rioters, and seeing you all dive back in to reclaim the nostalgia, reconnect with old friends, and relive your glory days made it a truly special moment for everyone," Riot writes.
League of Legends Classic is Riot's nostalgic, retro-inspired gaming experience, a collection of greatest hits that pulls features from different seasons. It launched on July 29 with Season 3 as an anchor and initially included 60 champions: the original 40 alongside 20 hand-picked champions from 2009-2013, with more from that era planned over time.
