Carlos F. Puertolas unveiled several character animation tests produced during the pre-production of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.
Even though DreamWorks' most recent animated movie, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, didn't show the best box-office numbers, becoming one of the studio's least-earning films, there's no denying that in terms of 3D animation, Ruby Gillman has been a giant leap forward, demonstrating an unusual and experimental approach to character animation and anatomy.
Head of Character Animation at DreamWorks Carlos F. Puertolas has recently shared a cool demo, highlighting one of Ruby Gillman's strongest sides and allowing everyone to have a behind-the-scenes look at the movie's main character's early body animations.
According to Carlos, the demo depicts "one of the first tests animated during the pre-production of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken", while the goal was to "explore curvy limbs, easy-ins rather than overshoots, body parts isolation, and a whole lotta round shapes".
"Early explorations in animation are always a blast; there's no pressure to have things fixed or perfect," commented Carlos. "It's a time to experiment, to play around, and, if you are lucky, to stumble upon some things that work nicely."
Earlier, Character Art Director Charles Ellison also shared a sizeable collection of behind-the-scenes character designs, demonstrating various 3D models of the movie's main character, ranging from earlier designs to final versions:
