See How Framestore Created Post-Apocalyptic NYC for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3

Framestore examined real-world data from the city's streets and followed a traditional painting approach.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at how Framestore, a British VFX and computer animation studio, crafted a devastated world for Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City.

The show takes place in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, in a world where New York City has been taken over by the dead. Framestore's New York team, led by VFX Supervisor Steve Drew, turned recognizable city locations, from the Statue of Liberty and George Washington Bridge to Manhattan skylines and the Empire State Building, into abandoned, decayed manifestations of once-prosperous sightseeing. The studio developed and expanded assets established in previous seasons.

Framestore also contributed postvis and created one of the season's hero shots: a seamless flight over Manhattan overlooking a destroyed CG replica of the Empire State Building. As shared by the studio, the team delved into The Walking Dead universe and its timeline of late 2010 and relied on the real-life look of the city, taking information mainly from Google Street View, to define which buildings were constructed at the time.

According to the studio, large-scale environments posed the biggest creative challenge. Some of the shots included a vast panorama of Manhattan, from Midtown to the Financial District. The team followed an approach usually employed by traditional painters and detailed only visual focal points – the places which were likely to draw viewers' eyes – while keeping other areas more impressionistic.
