Sony has released a new corporate report, and you can clearly see where the company is going with its innovations. It is building a system to support creators and fans, and one of the tools for this is, you guessed it, AI.
Not just that, the company "is positioning AI as a catalyst for positive transformation and a partner in creativity, based on the belief that AI should support people."
"We place great importance on encouraging our employees to be wise, proactive users of AI, as well as addressing risks such as copyright infringement, privacy and ethics."
Sony thinks using generative AI is "a starting point for enhancing productivity, reforming work processes, and inspiring creativity." Aside from its genAI platform Enterprise LLM, it is exploring the use of AI in the design and manufacturing of image sensors.
The report also claims that the company is developing usage guidelines and guardrails to promote risk awareness and "create an environment where AI can be used safely and appropriately."
"At the same time, in order to protect the value of the IP generated by creators and their creative activities, we are developing AI technology that detects the unauthorized use of music and other copyright infringements, and we are also exploring the possibilities to further support game creators."
Here are some tools in Sony's use:
- A sound separation technology that upgrades the audio of classic film titles.
- PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling technology that uses machine learning to provide "super sharp image clarity" on PlayStation 5 Pro.
- Machine-learning technology for more efficient production of games and anime, which automatically creates subtitles and syncs characters' mouth movements. It was used in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to make simultaneous subtitling automatic in some languages.
- AnimeCanvas, an anime production software that "aims to improve the efficiency of drawing and finishing."
- Mocopi, a mobile motion capture system, which "substantially cuts time and cost compared to traditional manual methods." You can see its results in Solo Leveling.
Let's finish the article with Sony's "Special You, Diverse Sony" philosophy: "Sony has always respected the independence and aspirational spirit of individuals, cherishing a corporate culture based on a partnership of choice between Sony and each individual employee, where each party is accountable for being responsive to the needs of the others."
This philosophy "conveys the aspiration that each unique individual who shares Sony’s Purpose and Sony, which embraces diverse individuals, will continue to grow together."
