Sony Honda Mobility Wants Game Devs To Build Apps for The Afeela EV
Sony Honda Mobility is positioning its car, the AFEELA EV, as a developer platform with SDK tools, APIs, and simulation environments for building in-vehicle applications and interactive experiences following announcements at GDC.
Sony Honda Mobility’s AFEELA electric vehicle is often presented as a high-tech EV built around entertainment, connectivity, and software-driven experiences. But during a recent developer presentation at GDC 2026, the company made it clear that its ambitions go beyond building another premium electric sedan.
Instead, AFEELA is being positioned as a programmable mobility platform where developers can build applications that run directly inside the vehicle.
While many modern EVs emphasize battery performance, range, and charging speed, Sony Honda Mobility appears to be taking a different angle. The company is focusing heavily on software ecosystems, in-vehicle applications, and interactive entertainment, areas where Sony’s background in gaming and digital media would theoretically give it a distinct advantage.

At the same time, some analysts have noted that the vehicle itself may not push EV technology as far as some newer competitors. The AFEELA is expected to launch at around $89,900 with roughly 300 miles of range, specs that are competitive but not necessarily groundbreaking compared to newer luxury EVs entering the market.
However, Sony Honda Mobility seems less concerned with winning the EV hardware race and more interested in turning the vehicle into something closer to a software platform on wheels.

The AFEELA-1 is the first production vehicle from Sony Honda Mobility, the joint venture formed between Sony and Honda to explore new software-centric approaches to mobility.
The vehicle incorporates a 360-degree sensing system consisting of roughly 40 sensors, including cameras, radar, LiDAR, and ultrasonic sensors that support advanced driver assistance features and autonomous capabilities.
Inside the cabin, the car emphasizes digital experiences with a full-width dashboard display, immersive audio systems, and cloud-connected services. Sony has also explored entertainment integrations such as PlayStation Remote Play, allowing passengers to stream games from their home consoles directly to the car’s infotainment system.

The most interesting aspects for developers lie in the software architecture and development platform surrounding the vehicle.
Sony Honda Mobility discussed what it calls the AFEELA Creator Hub, a developer platform designed to enable application developers, UI designers, and content creators to build experiences specifically for the vehicle.
Rather than treating the infotainment system as a closed interface, the company is designing the car as a connected mobility ecosystem.
According to the presentation, the platform combines several key systems:
Real-time vehicle telemetry
In-cabin UI interfaces
Audio and ambient lighting systems
Cloud-connected APIs

For developers used to working with mobile platforms or game engines, the architecture looks similar to a modern application ecosystem built on top of hardware APIs and cloud services.
Sony Honda Mobility also shared early details about the AFEELA SDK, which is expected to enter beta in Summer 2026. The SDK will include development libraries, documentation, and tools designed to let developers build and test applications even without access to the physical vehicle.
One notable feature is the ability to perform end-to-end validation entirely on a workstation. Developers can use recorded vehicle data, simulators, and virtual vehicle environments to test how applications behave inside the car.

The SDK isn't out yet; it's planned for Summer 2026, but you can get a glimpse of the types of software already confirmed over on the official website.
You can also fill out the contact form to get in touch with the team in advance, perhaps with any ideas or pitches. They seem particularly interested in games and apps that take advantage of the vehicle's data when in-use and feel native to the car's environment.
