Spectacular Dimensional Rift Effect Made in 3D
Raúl Fernández Guardia explored different techniques.
Raúl Fernández Guardia doesn't do anything halfway, and this beautiful dimensional rift VFX is no exception. The character slices through the universe itself with a clean strike to teleport to another place in a flashy move created with Houdini and Unreal Engine.
"Many 'dimensional rift' effects allow you to glimpse other worlds through portals, but rarely do you feel like you can go inside them. I wanted to push that idea further. The key aspect of this approach is that both worlds coexist – no teleports or additional cameras. This enables effects like seamlessly dissolving one world into the other, which isn’t possible with window-like portals."
For this effect, Guardia explored different techniques inspired by games and cinematic references, like Lords of the Fallen, Tides of Annihilation, and God of War 2. He also experimented with the fragmented statue driven by Niagara particles, custom masks and UV mappings, and fake light projections.
