Square Enix, Bandai Namco & Other Japanese Publishers Demand OpenAI's Sora 2 Stop Using Their Content

Japan means business.

Bandai Namco

A couple of weeks ago, Japan asked OpenAI "not to engage in actions that could constitute copyright infringement" with its text-to-video AI model Sora 2, saying that "anime and manga are irreplaceable treasures that we can be proud of around the world."

And it's not going to back down: now, Japanese publishers, including Square Enix, Bandai Namco, and Kadokawa, as part of CODA (Content Overseas Distribution Association), demand the exclusion of their content from Sora's training (via Eurogamer).

The statement requests that CODA members' works are not used for machine learning without permission, and that Open AI responds "sincerely" to claims and inquires from CODA members regarding copyright infringement.

"CODA has confirmed that a large portion of content produced by Sora 2 closely resembles Japanese content or images. CODA has determined that this is the result of using Japanese content as machine learning data. In cases, as with Sora 2, where specific copyrighted works are reproduced or similarly generated as outputs, CODA considers that the act of replication during the machine learning process may constitute copyright infringement."

CODA also addressed Sora 2's opt-out system, which removes materials from its pool only after the copyright owner's request. "However, under Japan’s copyright system, prior permission is generally required for the use of copyrighted works, and there is no system allowing one to avoid liability for infringement through subsequent objections."

There are more legal cases connected to AI now than ever, and we might welcome a new world soon: for example, Anthropic, the creator of the AI assistant Claude, agreed to pay $1.5 billion to around 500,000 authors whose works were used in the tech's training.
