Striking Distance: It Was Too Difficult to Connect PUBG and The Callisto Protocol

The two games were supposed to be linked.

Striking Distance’s chief technology officer Mark James shared that The Callisto Protocol and PUBG, both published by Krafton, were supposed to be connected, but it proved to be too difficult to link them together.

It does sound surprising as one is a Dead Space spiritual successor where you fight mutated monsters and the other is a multiplayer battle royale. However, it's true according to Mark James.

"We looked at the two universes," he told PCGamesN, "and there were a good 400 years in between both of them. It started to be so large – the connection would have taken away from the Callisto universe. It became so difficult to tell our story and still make that connection. So we were like, ‘we’ve got one game to kind of establish this universe, and we hope to take it forward as, finger crossed, a franchise’, so we spoke to Krafton and said ‘we don’t want to make this part of the PUBG universe anymore.’ And they basically said if you think that’s the right decision for the game, then you don’t have to do it."

It's not clear exactly how the two would be connected, although Ed Smith from PCGamesN assumed that some of the inmates could have been former contenders in PUBG, "punished for all their maiming and killing" or those who refused to compete in the deathmatch and were sent to prison to set an example.

Even though we won't see the games in one universe, we'll get some easter eggs in the upcoming survival horror game.

"There are easter eggs in the game, even easter eggs from previous games,” James explains. “It’s a nice little thing to add in, these little discoverable items. You’re going to discover audio logs from the previous prisoners, scrawlings on the walls, and the more you explore the more you’re going to learn about the origins of the prison."

The Callisto Protocol is coming out on December 2 this year. Check out the game on Steam and the article here and don't forget to join our Reddit page and our Telegram channel, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
