See Malucard's WIP project in action.
Everyone enjoys retro games decompilations, particularly those that dissect classic Nintendo titles to make them playable on other consoles. Nintendo 64 games and Mario titles hold special appeal for many enthusiasts, who delve into these games to explore their systems or to bring modern classics, like Minecraft, to these consoles.
A modder known as Malucard is currently working on bringing Super Mario 64 to the PS1, the N64's main competitor. As you can see in Video Game Esoterica's video above, the project is still in its early stages, so many elements aren't functioning correctly yet. Issues include floating trees, broken animations, incomplete camera controls, and more. Still, considering the differences between the N64 and PS1, and the fact that the N64 was more powerful in terms of raw computing performance, this achievement is still impressive.
Game Developer Elias Daler, who recently published a fan remake of the 2004 classic Yume Nikki, shared a thread on why exactly this project is such a big deal:
You can find Malucard's code for this port on GitHub, and while you're here, take a look at Hollow Knight: Silksong recreated in Nintendo 64 style by Godot Developer Gustavo Barros:
