We will likely not hear any news until 6 months before the release.
The Elder Scrolls 6 has been one of the most anticipated games since it was announced in 2018, but we still don't have any information about it apart from an old trailer and the fact that it's in early development. And it looks like we shouldn't even hope for more any time soon.
In an interview with MinnMax, former Bethesda design director Bruce Nesmith addressed the early announcement, saying the only reason why Todd Howard did it is that "the pitchforks and torches were out." But he's sure we won't get any more details until 6 months before the launch because this is the best time to begin sharing. In Howard's opinion, the video game industry "has short memories," and companies talking about their games "years ahead of time" are doing themselves a disservice.
"The best time to start talking about it is six months before release. Only the fact that everybody was... you know, the pitchforks and torches were out, that was what got Todd to say, 'Yes, we are going to do Elder Scroll 6 – I promise you it's for real, it'll happen!' But I'm betting you won't hear much in the way of details until a good six months before release, which is the way it should be – I think that's the best approach and he's proven that works really well, at least for Bethesda."
Todd Howard himself revealed earlier that he considers the game's announcement to be a mistake and wishes to have approached it differently.
It's still a pretty long time we'll have to wait as The Elder Scrolls 6 is expected to be out in 2026 at the earliest. Phil Spencer, the CEO of Xbox and Microsoft Gaming, mentioned an even farther-away date: the next game in the series is still at least five years in the future.
So what will we see in The Elder Scrolls 6? Nesmith said that the "things that were developed in Oblivion and in Skyrim will be further developed in The Elder Scrolls 6." He didn't mention what they would be but said players would find traces of many things from the previous installments, including the magic system developed for Skyrim.
"The whole magic system for Skyrim, that I persuaded Todd to let me throw the baby and the bathwater and start from scratch, and he trusted me enough to do that, there will probably still be traces of that in 6," he shared. "The whole 'you do it to get better at it', while that was not my unique idea, I had a large hand in that – that's absolutely going to continue. A lot of the concepts dealing with how you level, things like that – there'll be a bunch of new ideas thrown in, but I'm betting some of the stuff I worked on will still survive."
