The Metal Gear Series Tops 60 Million Sales
The series sold 700,000 games in the last nine months alone.
Konami has recently published an update on its digital entertainment business, revealing that since its launch in July 1987, the renowned Metal Gear franchise, authored by Hideo Kojima, has sold over 60 million units worldwide.
"Konami has a multitude of high-profile titles both in Japan and overseas, such as eFootball, METAL GEAR, and PAWAFURU PUROYAKYU series, which have respectively sold or downloaded over 700 million, 60.0 million and 24.8 million copies worldwide," the report reads. "We have proactively promoted the production and distribution of games for mobile devices and gaming platforms bringing excitement to customers worldwide."
According to VGChartz, the studio reported 59.3 million Metal Gear units sold back in November 2022, indicating that 700,000 Metal Gear games were sold in the past nine months alone, despite the absence of a new mainline title since Metal Gear: Survive, a disliked spin-off from the main MGS V story, in 2018.
The 60M+ milestone, as impressive as it is, will most likely be beaten in the near future upon the release of Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater, a remake of the original 2004 action-adventure stealth video game MGS 3: Snake Eater, officially announced back in May, and Metal Gear Solid Vol.1, which comprises remastered versions of MGS 1, MGS 2, and MGS 3 and set to be released on PlayStation 5 in Fall, 2023.
Earlier Konami confirmed that MGS Delta will feature the original voice cast, revealed that the series creator Hideo Kojima is not working on the remake, and explained why they chose to develop the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and not, for example, the original game.
