The New Gorillaz Short Film was Created Using Hand-Painted Backgrounds

It was inspired by The Jungle Book and other classic 2D animated films.

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, creators of the virtual band Gorillaz, wanted to pay homage to classic 2D films with their new video The Mountain, The Moon Cave & The Sad God.

“Circumstances now find Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs, 2D, and Noodle in India, having made their way to Mumbai with the help of four fake passports courtesy of a New York business acquaintance of Murdoc. The band has turned its back on international pop stardom, with our heroes now immersed in the rhythms of mystical music-making, as they navigate the mountainous terrain of this thing called life."

- The official description

Hewlett co-created the film with Max Taylor and Tim McCourt from the studio The Line, and he said it took them 18 months to finish it. A Reddit user shared in a post that the video was made with cel animation. The amount of work it must have taken is extremely noteworthy and commendable.
