This 3D Model Really Looks Like Trash

What? It's a compliment!

It's not often you get to call something "trash" or "garbage" and mean it as a compliment, but this incredible project by 3D Environment Artist Nibir Khan is one of those rare cases.

Over on Reddit, Nibir shared a look at a highly-realistic garbage bag model and the smart material made for it, along with some details on the creation process behind them. According to the artist, the bag was simulated in Marvelous Designer, sculpted in ZBrush, cleaned up in Maya, and textured with Substance 3D Painter. The setup involved baking the refuse objects into the Height Map, then controlling the Albedo of those objects through a levels adjustment, as shown in the video above.

"Basically, the bag itself is empty with all of that detail being pushed through the textures," the author noted.

The asset, impressive in and of itself, is but a smaller part of Every Ending is a New Beginning, a 3D environment project that tells the story of a young student preparing to leave her hometown in rural Japan to study abroad. Our interview with Nibir, diving deeper into how the scene was set up, is going live on October 2, so stay tuned.
