This Anime-Style Pixel Adventure Conveys Melancholic Vibe of Tokyo
Tokyo Stories is a series of intertwining narratives set in a living, restless city.
Immerse yourself in the wistful, melancholic vibes of Tokyo with this WIP anime-style adventure portraying the Japanese capital in somber pixelated 3D style, powered by Unity.
Tokyo Stories, from Drecom and Happinet, follows a girl searching for her missing friend as she explores an urban hub, unraveling the mystery behind the disappearance, alongside a boy carrying a secret he cannot share. As described by the developer, the game is a series of overlapping stories set in the empty city of Tokyo, and the city is shown as a living character with its own personality and manifestation in the hustle of urban life.

The melancholic atmosphere, enhanced by a charming pixel art style, is one of the features that make the game stand out. The developers put special attention to crafting this aesthetic. Earlier, we had a chance to talk to Yuki Ikeda, the Producer and Director of Tokyo Stories, who shared the creators' ideas that influenced the art direction:
"Although we thought we would like to create a pixel art game, we thought we wouldn't be able to make one that wasn't high fantasy or cyberpunk, so we considered making a game that was pixel art in an ambiguous way. The inspiration came from thinking of a plan to make pixel art in a way that resembled cutouts of everyday backgrounds."
