This Compact Disc Shader Made in Blender Looks Very Impressive
It makes me want to clean the fingerprints.
The 3D Artist Astrvm_vctm shared on Reddit a compact disc shader built with a Diffraction Grating System, showing a video of a disc moving and reflecting light. The CD even has fingerprints and subtle scratches that create a more realistic look.
In the replies, the artist explained that they used SilverwingVFX's tutorial on diffraction grating and adapted it to work in Blender's Cycles, but trying to denoise the render was hard because their shader was created with a white noise texture.
They also mentioned that they used a Normal map as the grating direction to achieve the diffraction effect, using an image texture of a cone's normal to control and direct the rainbow colors. A user asked if they're planning to sell the shader or make a tutorial; the artist said that they're making other similar projects and the plan is to create an asset pack.
Another user commented that the dispersion goes the wrong way; on CDs, it splits colors from the center outward. Astrvm_vctm agreed after some research and shared the updated setup and the results after applying the changes.

In this one, the artist explained that it has eight point lights scattered in the scene, which can cause the fast movement of the rainbow streaks.
