This Farming Sim Is a Stardew Valley & Twin Peaks' Lovechild Where You Run a Decaying Farm
Carbonara Games' debut title, Crop, is an atypical representative of the genre: instead of living a peaceful farm life, you have to fight famine, restore half-dead farmland, and solve the town's mysteries in this sim.
Carbonara Games, a three-person studio from Oslo, is working on an unusual interpretation of a farming simulation. In Crop, instead of enjoying endless sunny days on a cute little farm, you have to grow crops on nearly rotten land, feed a town that has no one else to rely on, and solve mysteries amid never-ending irrigation, digging, and planting.
In the game, you play as a character who wakes up with no memory of what happened before. The only thing they know now is that they're bound to a farm the whole town relies on. Somehow, it got cut off from the rest of the world, and the crops you grow are people's (and animals') only food source.

You have to dig trenches, install pumps, remove weeds, fight off the ever-hungry pests, produce compost for better crop quality, and more. The weather in this dark, forgotten town is merciless, with constant rainstorms getting in the way of keeping the farm alive.
Your farm adventures don't end with dirt and weeds, however. The deeper you dig, the more secrets begin to resurface. As you shovel, spray, and cut your way through hunger and decay, you will discover dark secrets behind the town's descent into doom. Ultimately, you'll have to find out why you were brought here in the first place and what is hiding in the darkest corners of the town.

In their news hub on Steam, developers explained that the idea for the eerie farming game came from their shared dream to have their own corner within a genre they adored. They made their farming sim by "taking its familiar core and wrapping it in surreal dread, thriller tension, and an eerie atmosphere that farming games have never quite ventured into," the team commented. Carbonara Games' developers describe Crop as "Stardew Valley meets Twin Peaks."
Crop will be released in 2027, although the exact date is unclear. You can wishlist the game on Steam and read the developers' notes on production to find out more about how they built the world of Crop and created the unnerving, Silent Hill-esque atmosphere.
