This Slay the Spire-Style Indie Roguelike Deckbuilder is Available in Early Access
Crawl through the insane, colorful, hand-drawn dungeons and eat your enemies in this first-person roguelike deckbuilder.
The Slay the Spire-esque game titled Shroom and Gloom has been in development since 2021. The first playable prototype became available back in 2024, the demo was released in 2025, and now the game is available in early access on Steam.
All the environments, characters, and animations are hand-drawn, creating a true indie game experience. What's more, Team Lazerbeam has been in touch with the community the entire time while working on the project, constantly shaping the experience around user feedback.
"From the earliest stages of developing Shroom and Gloom, we prioritized sharing playable prototypes with our community. The feedback we've received on these early prototypes and our free demo has played a massive role in helping us make this game the best game it can be," states Team Lazerbeam on Steam.

In Shroom and Gloom, you have to fight monstrous mushrooms as you crawl through trippy dungeons full of fungi, creepy plants, and skeletons (of the less fortunate explorers who came before you, it seems). You get to build two separate card decks as you travel through the world of Shroom and Gloom: the combat deck for battling the enemies and the explore deck for navigating the dungeons. There are two different pathways, each featuring around 300 explore and combat cards.
One of the coolest features of the gameplay is the possibility of infinite expansion and modification of the cards. You can turn weak low-level cards into the ultimate killer cards, modify your rare cards, and more. If that's not enough, you can literally eat your enemies alive. Or have them moderately seasoned and roasted to a nice crunch – whichever you prefer. Eating the evil mushrooms will restore lost health.

The developers are planning to keep the game in early access for 1-2 years. The current version is fully playable with all the core features in place. Even though, for the most part, the key mechanics are figured out, the team is planning to watch gamers' streams and let's plays to see what else can be perfected before the full release.
Speaking of which, at this point, the developers are not planning to price the early-access game and the full release differently. You can get Shroom and Gloom for $14.99 on macOS or Windows.
